Are you thinking of buying a stair lift and considering getting a used one for your home? Most of the stair lifts that you will find in the market are brand new, but it is definitely possible for you to search for used stair lifts if you want to. However, you should know that there are disadvantages to installing a previously used stair lift in your home. These disadvantages involve fit, lack of warranty and price.

1. The used stair lift track may not fit your staircase. All stair lifts are personalized products in that their tracks are made to fit a specific staircase. Thus, your staircase must be very similar with the original staircase for which the used stair lift was built. Otherwise, the stair lift will not fit your staircase well. It is acceptable to buy a stair lift whose track is longer than your staircase because you can have it cut. But if the track is shorter, you cannot have it extended.

2. You will not get a full warranty with a used stair lift. With a used stair lift, all you can expect is a short and limited warranty, if it is offered at all. This lack of a full factory warranty puts at risk the safety of whoever will use the stair lift. You also have to shoulder the expenses of having someone repair the stair lift if it gets broken. On the other hand, a brand new stair lift always comes with a full factory warranty, and this in turn gives you the protection and peace of mind that you need in case something happens during the warranty period.

3. The price difference may be negligible. A used stair lift of a certain brand may be of the same price as a new stair lift of another brand. In that, it is possible for you to save some money when you buy a used stair lift. However, if the price difference between a used stair lift and a brand new one is negligible, like only $200 or so, you are better off with a brand new one. You will actually save more with a brand new stair lift in this case simply because the brand new one comes with a full warranty that is well worth the price.
